What IS it about Bacon?

I cannot think of a single food item, with the possible exception of the cupcake, that has such a rabid following of fans. What is it about bacon that causes this incredible frenzy of appreciation? I like to eat bacon as much as the next person, and I enjoy the bacon memes that pop up in media, but I am totally unable to explain why bacon has an almost cult like following.

That said, I've seen so many interesting bacon themed memes, photos, and recipes, that I thought I'd just curate the best of them here and call this my bacon shrine.
